Dear Sir/Mam:
About a week ago I visited a friend staying at your establishment on Quamina Street. I enjoy visiting Cara Lodge because it is an oasis in the desert that is Georgetown. However, my last visit was quite disturbing.
One of your employees was playing a steady fare of vulgar and obscene dancehall numbers at the bar in the court yard. The volume was relatively high and this ‘music’ could be heard from all corners.
Two things are troubling about this:
- the employee thought it was ok to play what he was playing, and,
- no other employee saw it fit to stop the playing of such filth
I must say I was embarrassed being a Guyanese for there were a few foreign guests sitting having dinner and drinks and one couple had two children. Being that am confronted with these obscenities on a regular basis, I was thoroughly disgusted. I said nothing to the employee at the bar or anyone else present.
I paid my bill and exited as the latest hit in Guyana kick in she back door was being played. Am not sure if you’re aware sir, but this song glorifies anally raping women and the band is billed to perform at Jamzone.
I would like to assume that the promotion of sexual violence and wanton vulgarity is not in keeping with the mission and values of Cara Lodge, even if the Ministry of Tourism and some Guyanese give them their stamp of approval.
Going forward, I would recommend that all music played in your establishment first gets the approval of management and that you train your employees on what’s the acceptable standards of Cara Lodge. Again, I assume the promotion and glorification of such filth is not in keeping with your code of ethics.
