i was randomly grazing about Manaus one day with some friends and they took me to a quite upscale and exclusive shop. they were buying, i shopped with my eyes from this side of the window.
one thing i have to give the Brazos, they cook, boil, broil, stew, bake, parch, crush, dry, drink and consume just about every blasted plant, herb, bush, grass, tree and relations grown in their country. as eyes shopped i couldn’t help but wonder why is it that here they have such a plethora of stuff and not too far off down the beaten path in the land of perpetual plenty i don’t see these things? but like an annoying fly, i swatted the thought away.
perched on shelf three in aisle one something caught the corners of my eyes, Demerara Gold the packaging said. Demerara Gold? but…but…but am i not in Brazil? oh yes sire! you might be in Brazil, but this Demerara Gold is a product of Brazil. but i thought Demerara was Guyana. no, no…Demerara is Brazil too!
what is the real truth of king sugar in Guyana?
the minister of agriculture and Guysuco are currently in the middle rounds of a bruising court battle as to who is really entitled to use the name Demerara Gold. victory is not certain, and they’ve already been losses. but whatever the outcome, the minister and his team have many more fights to go.
