what began as a joyful evening for the waramadong faithful ended in sorrow. twas a beautiful game. they came back down from two nil to score with a beauty, equalize with a gem and went ahead 3-2 on pure skill and artistry.
with two minutes of extra time left I left the stands to take some pics on the field. i got lost in a crowd of wild celebrations for a minute and soon realized wismar christianburg had scored the equalizer with probably a minute left on the clock. this sent the game into penalty shootout.
for some strange reason no one can quite explain there was no extra time added.
i don’t quite recall the sequence but shootouts ended four all. in sudden death waramadong failed to convert on their first try and Wismar scored. the game was over and tears flowed freely. another close call two years in a row
this team carried with it the hopes, aspirations and dreams of many. I cant recall seeing this many Amerindians at any event in Georgetown outside of Amerindian heritage. the support and turn out in the games I saw quarter [Georgetown], semis [uitvlugt] and finals was unbelievable. I even saw Amerindians from the highway at the game!
some say this is a turning point for Guyana football and Amerindian players. time will tell. they just selected a national girls team with no Amerindian players. I personally still believe the bias will continue even though the players demonstrated once again that they do belong in the Guyana national team.
the politics was hovering in the distant as usual. petty and brutal as per norm. afterall another party won region 7 election time right? so some people cant support waramadong football. imagine that. but the love Amerindians remember. well…so they love to say. but more on that for another time
it was a heartbreaking moment for players, coaches and fans [Amerindian and coast landers] the team could never be accused of not giving their all. congrats to whazir bascombe, 19 goals and tournament MVP and all the players. hold your heads up high. you came, you saw and you conquered. and they’ll be talking about you for a long time to come
yes I am extremely biased so there are very little photos of the other team in the finals. I didn’t go to support them 🙂
